Danville City Council members face a difficult — but necessary — Tuesday on a plan designed to erase the city’s $105 million unfunded police/fire pension obligation during the next 22 years.

The city’s pension situation is not unusual in Illinois. Many communities have 30-45 percent of their respective police/fire pensions funded. Danville’s $105 million unfunded total accumulated during the past couple of decades as aldermen used revenue for more immediate expenses with the promise of catching up pension funding in the future.
